I am interested and actively engaged in science communication. Here are some ongoing projects and past activities I organized or joined. They are mostly in Japanese.

Cosmology at Buddhism Temple お寺で宇宙学
Cosmology at Buddhism Temple (Otera-de-Uchu-gaku) is a series of science-cafe style event at various Buddhism temples in and around Kyoto. It is held once in about 3-4 months, and every time there are two lectures, one by a scientist (mostly astronomy and space science but sometimes different fields) and one by a Buddhism monk. After the lecture we have round-table (though usually there’s no table) conversation on science(s) and religion(s), with beers and snacks (when the policy of the venue temple permits). Since the outbreak of Covid-19 we have held it online. You can find the English poster presented at CAP2018 conference here.
京都近辺のお寺を会場に、研究者とお坊さんと一緒に、宇宙、学問、宗教などについて語り合う会です。 通常の流れは、ゲストの研究者がそれぞれのテーマについて1時間ほど講演し、 続いてホストのお寺の僧侶の方にそれを受けてお話を頂き、 最後は車座になって全員で語り合ます。2020年の新型コロナ感染症の流行以降はオンラインで開催しています。
Uchu-Rakugo 宇宙落語
“Rakugo” is a comic story-telling art in Japan whose tradition is more than 400 years (slightly longer than the history of telescopic sunspot observation started by Galileo Galilei). Since 2011 we have annual Kyodai Uchu Rakugo Kai (Kyoto University’s Cosmic Rakugo) with kind collaboration from professional Rakugo storytellers, Mr Hayashi Someji and Mr Katsura Fukumaru, who make new Rakugo stories that incorporate the cutting-edge space sciences.
京都大学宇宙総合学研究ユニットの教員だった時にこのページの下の方で紹介しているような宇宙と○○をつなげる活動をしていたら、興味を持って下さった 京大OBの方々から「落語はどうや」と提案があり、そのOBの方々と一緒に「宇宙落語制作委員会」を結成して、2011年から毎年「京大宇宙落語会」を開催しています。 上方落語の林家染二さん、桂福丸さんのご協力のもと、最新の宇宙科学の成果を盛り込んだオリジナル落語を制作、上演しています。
Space talk with wine 宇宙とワイン
Every 2-3 months I give a small talk on space science and related topics at yu-an, a traditional Kyoto-style townhouse, over some nice food and wine.
京町屋を改装したワインサロンyu-anで 2ヶ月に1回程度、ワインを飲みながら宇宙のお話をさせて頂いています。
Space Arc Workshop 宇宙箱舟ワークショップ
Together with researchers, science communicators, school teachers, and students, we designed “Space Arc Workshop”, which can be used for various educational purposes at schools. In SAW, the participants form groups of 4-6 people, and each group design a “Space Ark” to move to another planet. Through considering and discussing which things, which living things, and who to bring with you, participants find different views and values about our environment, ecosystem, and the society.

Astro tea ceremony 宇宙茶会
Collaboration with Shuntaro Kondo, an evangelist of tea culture and the founder of AVANT-GARDE CHA KAI. We have co-organized several events that combined his tea ceremony and astronomical observations/talks. Kondo-san also produced a series of astro-tea-utensils (series 1 / series 2) in collaborations with various artists and craftspeople.
東京在住でアバンギャルド茶会を主催されている 茶人の近藤俊太郎さんと出会って始まった企画。 最初の宇宙茶会は、2010年11月に花山天文台で開催。その後近藤さんが東京でも宇宙茶会を開催したり、全国の作家の方に呼びかけて 宇宙をモチーフにしたお茶碗や茶道具のシリーズ 宇宙十職 を制作するなど、発展しています。
京都ではこれまで、花山天文台での第一回 (2010年11月7日）、 「お寺で宇宙学」にひっかけて京都・東山の正法寺での開催 (2011年5月21日)、 そして京大全学イベントである「京都大学アカデミックデイ(2012年9月2日）」の中の企画としても 開催されました。アカデミックデイでの開催記録はこちらの 報告書(PDF, 31MB)からも読めます。
Incense of the Universe 宇宙の香り
I had two workshops with Keiko Matsushita, an instructor of Japanese incense, to make original astro-incense by compounding various ingredients. Indeed there were not much about astronomy, but it was fun. I just gave brief lecture about astronomy and the participants make their own incense while thinking about the stars. Certainly they were not meant to reproduce the actual perfume of the cosmic gases and planetary atmosphere, as in most cases they are stinking and even toxic.
Later I was invited as an advisor when Japanese incense company, LISN, produced two series of incense, PLANETS and UNIVERSE.
お香のインストクター「香司」の松下恵子さんと2011年9月に京都・錦市場近くの先頭「錦湯」で、宇宙をテーマにしたお香作りのワークショップをしました。当日の様子は 松下さんのブログにあります。2012年4月には、松下さんと書家のRimiさんが企画した香りとアート書のワークショップのテーマが翌月21日に控えていた金環日食だったので、ゲストとして日食のお話をさせて頂きました。 当日の様子は 松下さんのブログや Rimiさんのブログ にあります。
こういうことやってたら、京都の老舗「松栄堂」がプロデュースするLISNさんにお声がけいただいて、宇宙をテーマにしたPLANETSとUNIVERSEというインセンスシリーズに関わらせていただきました。PLANETSの方は既にできていたインセンスのコンセプトの監修だけでしたが、UNIVERSEの方は、実際にどういう天体をテーマにするか企画のところから加わらせていただき、調香師さんに各天体のイメージをお話ししてそれをもとに調香師さんがその天体のインセンスを調合して下さるという面白い体験をすることができました。多分今でも買えると思います。
Astronomy and Japanese Calligraphy 宇宙書会

書家の Rimiさんとの企画で3回くらい、宇宙＋書のワークショップをやりました。 これも無理矢理宇宙にした感は否めませんが気にしません。
2013年7月13日には「宇宙書会 ～七夕伝説から宇宙的未来への想像力を書に～」と題し、東京で毎年開催されているすみだ川アートプロジェクトの一環として、 アサヒ・アートスクエアでワークショップを開催しました。 告知ページと Rimiさんのブログ、 当日の写真
また2013年7月27日には、京都芸術センターがシリーズで開催している「明倫茶会」の席主を依頼されたので、「書とレモネードは宇宙の奇跡か」と題して、 宇宙の創世から人間が生まれて書をたしなんだり、檸檬からレモネードを作って飲んだりするようになるまでの歴史をお話して、それをアート書で表すワークショップとして開催しました。 告知ページ
当日の様子はそのうち…と思ってもう8年経ちました。
Astronomy and pottery 宇宙と陶芸
Workshop on “Colors of Cosmos and Colors of Pottery” with Keiko USHIO, a potter who has special expertise in glaze. Ushio-san is the artist who made the Mars teabowl in the astro-tea-utensils series produced by Kondo-san.
宇宙茶会のところで書いた近藤俊太郎さん主催の 宇宙十職で 火星のお茶碗を作った陶芸家の潮桂子さんと、2013年10月26日に京都・東山の 潮さんの工房で宇宙と陶芸のコラボワークショップを開催しました。 土捻りをする陶芸ワークショップはよくありますが、釉薬の専門家でもある潮さんが 原料からオリジナル釉薬を作るワークショップをしてみたいとのことだったので、 天文学でも重要な「いろ」をテーマに「陶器のいろと宇宙のいろ」というタイトルに。

Cosmic Sweets 和菓子と宇宙
Workshop on astronomy and japanese sweets! It was hosted by Loftwork Inc. I gave a small talk on how the universe started and then evolved to create nice things such as sweets. Then the participants create original sweets with the image of their cosmos, under the instruction of Nikka, an unit of creative Japanese sweets (wagashi). Some photos here.
Loftworkが主催しているワークショップシリーズで、杉山早陽子さんと内田美奈子さんのお二人による和菓子ユニット・日菓さんと「和菓子と宇宙」のワークショップをさせて頂きました。当日の様子はこちら。
Joint program with Kyoto Seika University 京都精華大学と京都大学の連携プロジェクト「宇宙とアート」
Soon after I got the position at Kyoto University’s USSS in 2008, I proposed a joint program to promote exchanges between scientists at Kyoto University and artists at Kyoto Seika University. It was my first opportunity to have real contact with people in the fields of art, design, and Manga. I also had a class on natural science for the art students at KSU during 2010-2017.
2008年に「理工系から人文社会系にわたる学際的な宇宙の研究」を目指す 宇宙ユニットの専任教員になった時から、なんとかここに芸術系も入れられたらなあと思っていました。 ちょうどその頃、京都精華大学のマンガ学部の学生が京大生とチームを作って 京都大学の研究をマンガで紹介するというプロジェクトがあり、それをきっかけに 京都精華大と京大の間で連携協力協定が締結されました。 そのマンガは京大のリポジトリからダウンロードできます。 （こちら）
この連携の話を聞いて、ぜひ宇宙をテーマに京都精華大学と何か一緒にさせて頂きたいと、 京大の広報課を通じてコンタクトし、宇宙ユニットと京都精華大学との間で始めたプロジェクトです。 京都精華大の歴代のマンガ学部長である牧野圭一先生や竹宮恵子先生をはじめ、芸術、デザイン、マンガなど 様々な分野の方と交流させて頂き、個人的にも世界が広がるきっかけになったプロジェクトです。2010年度から2017年度までは京都精華大で自然科学論（後に宇宙と地球の科学に改題）の授業も担当させて頂き、今でも精華は思い入れのある大学です。京都市芸大の教員になるきっかけであったといえるかもしれません。
